中国の中南部、雲南省からネパールやインド、インドシナ半島それにインドネシアやパプアニューギニアに分布しています。耐寒性が高く、単幹の偽茎は灰緑色の蝋質で、高さは５メートル以上になります。葉は長さ３メートルほどで青緑色をしています。大きな花序を下垂させます。果実は卵形で、黄色く熟します。栽培もされていて、果実や種子が食用にされます。中国語では「象腿蕉（xiang tui jiao）」と呼ばれます。 |

The Snow banana (Ensete glaucum) belongs to Musaceae (the Banana family). It is an evergreen herb that is distributed from Yunnan Province in the central-southern China to Nepal, India, the Indochina Peninsula, and to Indonesia and Papua New Guinea. It is cold hardy, with a single pseudostem that is gray-green and waxy, and grows to a height of 5 m or more. The leaves are about 3 m long and blue-green in color. Large, drooping inflorescences are produced. The fruits are ovoid and ripen to yellow. It is also cultivated, and its fruits and seeds are edible. In Chinese, it is called "象腿蕉" (xiang tui jiao). |
