 パナマからブラジルにかけて分布しています。林床や岩上に生える
蔓性の多年草で、ストロン（匍匐茎）を伸ばして広がります。全体に軟
毛に被われます。葉は楕円形で対生し、葉脈に沿って淡緑色または
銀緑色の斑が入ります｡春から夏にかけて、赤色の花を咲かせま
す。さまざまな模様の園芸品種が作出されています。和名では「べに
ぎりそう（紅桐草）」と呼ばれます。写真中１・中２は園芸品種の「シル
バーシーン（cv. Silver Sheen）」、中３は「ムサイカ（cv. Musaica）」。
イワタバコ科エピスシア属の常緑多年草で、学名は Episcia
cupreata。英名は Flame violet。
Flame violet (Episcia cupreata) belong to Gesneriaceae (the African violet
family). It is an evergreen perennial herb that is distributed southward from
Panama to Brazil. The herb grows in the forest floors or on the rocks and
spreads by stolons. The whole plant is covered with soft hairs. The leaves
are elliptic, opposite and pale green or silvery green mottled outlining the
veins. The red flowers bloom from spring to summer. The many cultivars
are breeded with varied leaf-figures.
