It is a perennial herb that is distributed to Europe, including Britain, Northern Africa and Western Asia up to Kashmir, in the United States and Canada. This herb grows in marshes and swamps, moist mountain meadows, and can reach on average 30-80 cm in height. The stem is erect and densely covered with hairs. The leaves are opposite, unstalked but not amplexicaul, lanceolate and toothed. The tiny flowers are pale pink or pale purple, with four petals, eight stamens and a 4-lobed stigma. They bloom from June to August. The fruit is a 3-7 cm long capsule.
