The Fire heath (Erica cerinthoides) belongs to Ericaceae (the Azalea family). It is an evergreen shrublet that is distributed from the Western Cape to the Eastern Cape, Transkei, Drakensberg, Mpumalanga in South Africa, as well Lesotho and Eswatini. It grows in dry subtropical biomes and is 50-100 cm tall. Branches grow from the base, with few branchlets. The leaves are needle-like, 3 to 4 mm long, soft, and arranged in wholed. It produces bunches of red, vermilion-red, or white tubular flowers at the ends of its branches from spring to fall. The English name is derived from the fact that this species often blooms after forest fires.
