The California buckwheat (Eriogonum fasciculatum) belongs to Polygonaceae (the Knotweed family). It is an evergreen shrub that is distributed from California in the southwestern part of the United States to northwestern Mexico. It grows along the coast, in mountains and deserts, and grows to about 1.5 m tall. It often branches to form mats and bushes. The leaves are slender and linear, about 1.5 cm long, with an involuted margin. The flowers are small, white to cream or pink, and bloom in loose clusters at the ends of the branches from April to September. The flowers turn from rusty pink to rusty red when dry. They are attractive to bees and are a good source of nectar. The fruit is an achene, up to 2.5 mm large and lacking any hair.
