北アメリカの西部に分布しています。乾燥した放牧地や潅木のある草原地帯、岩の多い斜面や崖に生え、高さは３０〜６０センチになります。全体が羊毛状の毛で密に被われています。この毛は、葉の表面の気流を減らし、熱を反射することによって、水分を保護しています。葉は線形から卵形で、羽状に分裂するか全縁です。５月から８月ごろ、黄色い８〜１３個の舌状花のある頭花をひとつ、花茎の上に咲かせます。

キク科エリオフィルム属の一年草または多年草で、学名は Eriophyllum lanatum。英名は Oregon sunshine、Common woolly sunflower。

Oregon sunshine (Eriophyllum lanatum) belongs to Asteraceae (the Aster family). It is an annual or perennial herb that is native to western North America. This herb grows on dry meadows, shrub-steppes, rocky slopes and bluffs, and it can reach 30-60 cm in height. The whole plant is densely covered with woolly hairs. The hairs conserve water by reflecting heat and reducing air movement across the leaf's surface. The leaves are linear to oval, pinnately divided or entire. The lonely flower-head with 8-13 yellow ray flowers bloom on flowering stalks from May to August.
