The Rubber rabbitbrush (Ericameria nauseosa) belongs to Asteraceae (the Aster family). It is an evergreen shrub that is distributed from the western part of North America to Texas and northern Mexico. It grows in dry grasslands and forest areas, and can reach a height of around 2.4 m. The stem is upright, thin and supple, and branches frequently to form a round shape. The leaves are linear to narrowly spatulate, and are densely covered in soft felt-like hairs. From August to October, small yellow flower heads bloom densely at the top of the stem. The flower heads are 6 to 13 mm long and consist of five small disk florets. In the past, the Navajo people obtained yellow dye from these flower heads.
