ヨーロッパのアルプスおよびアペニノ山脈に分布しています。草地に生え、高さは３０〜５０センチになります。基部の葉は楕円形から心形で、棘のような鋸歯と長い葉柄があります。６月から７月ごろ、散形花序に小さな卵形をした紺青色の花を咲かせます。紫青色の総苞が羽根のように広がり、目立ちます。

セリ科ヒゴタイサイコ属の多年草で、学名は Eryngium alpinum。英名は Sea holly、Alpine sea holly。

The Sea holly (Eryngium alpinum) belongs to Apiaceae (the Carrot family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed in the European Alps and the Apennino Mountains. It grows in meadows and is 30-50 cm tall. The basal leaves are elliptic to heart-shaped with spiny serrations and long petioles. Small, ovate-shaped, dark blue flowers bloom in umbels from June to July. The purple-blue involucre spreads out like a feather and is conspicuous.
