The amethyst sea holly (Eryngium amethystinum) belongs to Apiaceae (the Carrot family). It is a perennial herb that is native to the eastern Mediterranean. This herb grows on dry places and soils that are rich in calcium, and can reach 30-50 cm in height. The basal leaves are obovate, pinnate, spiny, leathery, and mid-green. It flowers in mid to late summer. The flowers are light blue to purple , bloom in the cylindrical umbels with silvery blue bracts. They are attractive to butterflies.
