南アフリカの東ケープ地方からモザンビークに分布しています。高さは３．６メートルほどになり、葉は３出複葉で、小葉は菱状広卵形です。葉脈の上や葉柄には小さな棘が生えます。夏の終わりから秋にかけて、茎頂の総状花序に朱赤色の花を咲かせます。冬には落葉しますが、氷点下の気温にも耐え、春には再び芽吹きます。

マメ科デイゴ属の落葉低木で、学名は Erythrina humeana。英名は Natal coral tree、Dwarf kafferboom。

The Natal coral tree (Erythrina humeana) belongs to Fabaceae (the Pea family). It is a small deciduous tree that is distributed from the Eastern Cape region of South Africa to Mozambique. It grows up to 3.6 m tall and has trifoliate compound leaves with rhombic broadly ovate leaflets. Small spines grow on the veins and petioles. Vermilion-red flowers bloom in racemes at the top of the stem from late summer to fall. It is deciduous in winter, but tolerates sub-zero temperatures and sprouts again in spring.
