アメリカの東部から中部に分布しています。乾燥した暑い地域に生え、高さは６０〜１５０センチになります。葉は丈夫で、平行脈があり、「ユッカ」に似ています。縁に沿って、小さな棘が生えています。７月から９月ごろ、球状で「あざみ」に似た緑白色の頭花を咲かせます。果実も花のかたちと変わらず、茎にずっと残ります。別名で「がらがらへび使い（Rattlesnake master）」とも呼ばれますが、この根が「がらがらへび」の咬み傷にきくという昔から信じられている考えに由来します。

セリ科ヒゴタイサイコ属の多年草で、学名は Eryngium yuccifolium。英名は Button eryngo、Rattlesnake master。

Button eryngo (Eryngium yuccifolium) belongs to Apiaceae (the Carrot family). It is a perennial herb that is native to the eastern and central United States. This herb grows in arid, heated areas and can reach 60-150 cm in height. The leaves are stiff, parallel-veined and yucca-like with small prickels running along the edges. The spherical, thistle-like heads are greenish white and come from July to September. The fruits look the same as the flowers and remaining on the stalks. Button eryngo is also called 'Rattlesnake master', and the name is derived from an old belief that the roots could be used to heal rattlesnake bites.
