わが国の北海道東部、釧路や根室地方それにユーラシア大陸北部、北アメリカ北部に分布しています。針葉樹林の林内や湿原などに生え、高さは５〜２０センチになります。地下茎を伸ばして広がり、葉は楕円形で４〜５対が対生します。６月から７月ごろ、花茎を伸ばして黒紫色の花を咲かせます。白い花弁状に見えるのは総苞片です。果実は核果で、夏の終わりに赤く熟します。

ミズキ科ゴゼンタチバナ属の多年草で、学名は Chamaepericlymenum suecicum（syn. Cornus suecica）。英名は Eurasian dwarf cornel。

Eurasian dwarf cornel (Chamaepericlymenum suecicum) belongs to Cornaceae (the Dogwood family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed to the east of Hokkaido of Japan, Kushiro and Nemuro regions, as well as northern Eurasia and northern North America. This herb grows in coniferous forests and bogs, and up to a height of 5-20 cm. It spreads by the rhizomes, the leaves are elliptic, and 4 to 5 pairs oppose each other. The flower stalks are stretched and black purple flowers bloom from June to July. The bracts are white petal-like. The fruits are drupes and ripe red at the end of summer.
