It is an evergreen fern that is distributed in the alpine zones of Honshu and Shikoku, Hokkaido in Japan, and widely in the alpine zones of the Northern Hemisphere. It is an alpine variant of the "Common club moss". The stem (main axis) creeps and spreads on the ground, and side branches rise up. The tips of the lateral branches are characterized by their white color. The strobilus stalk (peduncle) is erect, less than 10 cm long, with small linear leaves that are crimped and bear one to four sessile (without a pedicel) strobiluses at the tip.
