The "Ezo-hinano-usutsubo" (Scrophularia alata) belongs to Scrophulariaceae (the Figwort family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed in northern Honshu and Hokkaido in Japan, as well as the southern Kuril Islands, and southern Sakhalin. It grows on rocky coastal areas and reaches a height of 90 to 150 cm. The stem is erect and thick, with four ribs and narrow wing-like fins on the ribs. The leaves are broadly ovate with pointed tips and blunt serrations along the edges. From June to July, panicles appear at the tips of the stems, blooming with many sparse flowers. The corolla is pale yellowish-greenish-purple or purplish-brown, with the upper lip divided into two lobes and the lower lip divided into three lobes. The peduncles are covered with glandular hairs.
