わが国の北海道から千島列島、サハリンに分布しています。山地の道ばたなどに生え、高さは５０〜１００センチになります。茎や葉柄には細かい棘が密生しています。葉は３出複葉で、頂小葉は側小葉より大きく、菱状卵形から広卵形をしています。７月ごろ、茎頂や葉腋に花序をだし、やや下向きに白色の花を咲かせます。花弁は５個で、平開しません。果実は球形のキイチゴ状果で、赤色に熟します。

バラ科キイチゴ属の落葉低木で、学名は Rubus idaeus ssp. melanolasius (syn. Rubus idaeus var. aculeatissimus)。英名はありません。

The "Ezo-ichigo" (Rubus idaeus ssp. melanolasius) belongs to Rosaceae (the Rose family). It is a small deciduous tree that is distributed from Hokkaido in Japan to the Kuril Islands and Sakhalin. It grows on mountain roadsides and reaches a height of 50 to 100 cm. The stems and leaf stalks are densely covered with fine thorns. The leaves are trifoliate, with the terminal leaflet larger than the lateral leaflets and rhombic-ovate to broadly ovate in shape. In July, it produces inflorescences at the stem tips and leaf axils, blooming white flowers that tilt slightly downward. The flowers have five petals that do not spread out. The fruit is an etaerio of drupelets that ripens to a red color.
