わが国の固有種で、北海道のアポイ岳周辺や白鳥山（しらとりやま）などに分布しています。蛇紋岩や橄欖岩地帯の岩場に生え、高さは５〜１０センチになります。茎は紅紫色で無毛です。葉は狭卵形で茎の上部に３個、輪生状につきます。５月中旬から６月上旬ごろ、「おおばきすみれ（大葉黄菫）」よりもやや濃い黄色の花を咲かせます。側弁の内側と柱頭の両側面に突起毛があるのが特徴です。

スミレ科スミレ属の多年草で、学名は Viola brevistipulata var. hidakana。英名はありません。

"Ezo-kisumire" (Viola brevistipulata var. hidakana) belongs to Violaceae (the Viola family). It is a perennial herb that is endemic to Japan and is distributed around Mount Apoi and Mount Shiratori-yama in Hokkaido. It grows on rocks in serpentine and peridotite areas and is 5 to 10 cm tall. The stems are reddish-purple and hairless. It has three narrowly ovate leaves that grow in a whorl at the top of the stem. It is characterized by the presence of papillae on the inside of the lateral petals and on both sides of the stigma.
