バラ科リンゴ属の落葉小高木で、学名は Malus baccata var. mandshurica。英名は Siberian crabapple。
The Siberian crabapple (Malus baccata var. mandshurica) belongs to Rosaceae (the Rose family). It is a semi-tall deciduous tree that is distributed from Chubu region of Honshu north to Hokkaido, as well as Sakhalin, the Korean peninsula, northeastern China and Ussuri region. This tree grows on forest edges and riverbanks and up a height of 5-10 m. The bark is grayish brown and splits longitudinally when it becomes an mature tree. The leaves are broad elliptic to oblong-elliptic and alternate, with irregular saw-toothed edges. They are not divided into lobes as "Zumi" (Malus toringo). In addition, the beginning of the leaves is rolled. The umbels are borne on the branches and bloom white flowers from May to June. The fruit is pome and ripens deep red in fall. It is also known as "Hiroha-oozumi" by another name. In Chinese, it is called "毛山荊子" (mao shan jiang zi).
