The "Ezo-matsumushi-so" (Scabiosa jezoensis) belongs to Dipsacaceae (the Teasel family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed from the northern coast of Aomori Prefecture on Honshu to the Pacific coast of southern Hokkaido. It grows in sunny rocky areas, coastal grasslands, and meadows ranging from the coast to the mountains, reaching a height of 20 to 50 cm. The stem is erect and branches at the top. The leaves are basal, rhombic to rhombic-ovate in shape, and pinnately lobed. The lobes are linear with pointed tips. From around July to September, it produces bluish-purple capitula about 4 cm in diameter at the stem tips. The central florets are tubular, with protruding stamens. The small flowers around it have a two-lipped corolla; the smaller upper lip is two-lobed, and the larger lower lip is three-lobed.
