The Ezo spurce (Picea jezoensis) belongs to Pinaceae (the Pine family). It is a tall evergreen tree that is native to Hokkaido, the southern Kuril Islands, Sakhalin, the Korean Peninsula and east-northern China. This tree grows on montain slopes or along mountain streams, and can reach 30-40 m in height. The tree's crown is narrow cone to cone. The barks are blackish brown. The leaves are dark green needles, having two stomatal bands on the rear surface, and the shape at cross section is flat. The strobiles are cylindrical, 4-8 cm long, and drooping down from the branches. This tree are planted for shelter belts or garden trees, and the timbers are used for architectures or fittings. In Chinese, it is called "卵果魚鱗雲杉" (luan guo yu lin yun shan).
