わが国の本州、東北地方以北から北海道、それに千島列島や北半球に広く分布しています。池沼や湿地に生え、ふつうは「ひるむしろ」のように葉を浮かべています。７月から８月ごろ、水面から伸びた茎の先に穂状花序をだし、淡紅色の花を咲かせます。中４は園芸品種の「ロセア（cv. Rosea）」、中５〜６・下は「ファイアテール（cv. Firetail）」。

タデ科イヌタデ属の多年草で、学名は Persicaria amphibia。英名は Water smartweed、Knotweed。

Water smartweed (Persicaria amphibia) belongs to Polygonaceae (the Knotweed family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed northward from Tohoku district of Honshu to Hokkaido of Japan, as well as the Kuril Islands and Northern Hemisphere. This herb grows in ponds and marshes, usually floats its leaves on the water surface. The spikes are borne on the stems and bloom pale rose pink flowers from July to August.
