The "Ezo-touhiren" (Saussurea yesoensis) belongs to Asteraceae (the Aster family). It is a perennial herb that is found on the Shimokita Peninsula in Aomori Prefecture on Honshu, in Hokkaido in Japan, and on Sakhalin. It grows in coastal grasslands and reaches a height of 30 to 60 cm. The leaves are long, elliptical, and thick, with coarse serrations along the edges. From June to August, 10 to 40 small, reddish-purple flower heads bloom at the tips of the stems. The involucre is narrowly tubular, and the involucral bracts extend into thread-like tips that curve slightly backward. The fruit that forms after flowering is an achene.
