わが国の北海道と本州の東北地方、それに北半球の温帯地方のほとんどに分布しています。川岸や牧草地、道ばたなどに生え、高さは５〜１５センチになります。長さ８０センチ以上にもなる赤い匍匐枝によって広がります。葉は羽状複葉で、小葉は円鋸歯状で、裏面は部分的に白色の絹毛に被われます。６月から８月ごろ、黄色い５弁花を咲かせます。果実は乾燥した痩果の集まりです。別名で「ようしゅつるきんばい（洋種蔓金梅）」とも呼ばれます。

バラ科アルゲンチナ属の多年草で、学名は Argentina anserina (syn. Potentilla anserina)。英名は Common silverweed、Silver cinquefoil。

Common silverweed (Argentina anserina) belongs to Rosaceae (the Rose family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed to Hokkaido and Tohoku district of Honshu, as well as throughout the temperate Northern Hemisphere. This herb grows on river shores and in meadows and road-sides, up to a height of 5-15 cm. It spreads by creeping red stolons that can be up to 80 cm long. The leaves are pinnately compound with crenate leaflets which is covered with silky white hairs, particularly on the underside. The yellow 5-petaled flowers bloom from June to August. The fruit is a cluster of dry achenes.
