"Ezo-usagi-giku" (Arnica unalaschcensis var. unalaschcensis) belongs to Asteraceae (the Aster family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed from the Chubu region of Honshu north to Hokkaido in Japan. It grows in moist alpine meadows and is 15 to 40 cm tall. Yellow flower heads bloom at the end of the flower stalks from July to August. The tubular flowers have no hairs and the ray flowers are in a single row. The Japanese name is derived from the shape of the leaves, which resemble rabbit ears.
