わが国の固有種で、本州の山梨県から長野・静岡県に分布しています。フォッサマグナ要素の植物のひとつです。山地に生え、高さは１〜４メートルになります。葉は長楕円形で対生し、「いぼたのき（水蝋の木）」に似ています。５月から６月ごろ、枝先の葉腋に淡黄色の花を２個ずつ咲かせます。果実は液果で９月から１０月に真っ赤に熟します。果実は２個並んでつきますが合着しません。

スイカズラ科スイカズラ属の落葉低木で、学名は Lonicera demissa。英名はありません。

"Ibota-hyotan-boku" (Lonicera demissa) belongs to Caprifoliaceae (the Honeysuckle family). It is a small deciduous tree that is endemic to Japan and is distributed from Yamanashi to Nagano and Shizuoka prefectures in Honshu. It is one of the Fossa Magna element plants. It grows in mountainous areas and reaches 1 to 4 m in height. It produces two pale yellow flowers in the axils of its leaves at the ends of its branches from May to June. The berries ripen to bright red from September to October. Two fruits are borne side by side but do not unite.
