わが国の各地と朝鮮半島に分布しています。丘陵帯に生え、生け垣にも植栽されています。高さは２〜４メートルほど。よく分枝し、長楕円形の葉は対生します。５月から６月ごろ、枝先に小さな白い花をつけます。名前は、樹皮に「イボタロウムシ」が寄生することから。この小さなカイガラムシの分泌物からはイボタロウが採れ、敷居に塗ったり、家具や生糸の艶だしに使われます。

モクセイ科イボタノキ属の落葉低木で、学名は Ligustrum obtusifolium。英名は Border privet。

The Border privet (Ligustrum obtusifolium) belongs to Oleaceae (the Olive family). It is a small decidous tree that is native to Japan and the Korea Peninsula. This tree grows in foothills and can reach 2-4 m in height. It is also planted as a hedge tree. The stems are much-branched, the leaves are oblong and opposite. The small white flowers appear on the terminal branches from May to June. Wax insect (Ericerus pela) lives on the barks and had been used as a Chinese white wax.
