The Chinese juniper (Juniperus chinensis) belongs to Cupressaceae (the Cypress family). It is a tall evergreen tall that is distributed southward from Iwate prefecture of Honshu to Shikoku, Kyushu in Japan, the Korean Peninsula and China. This tree grows on the coastal rocks and sands, and can reach about 15 m in height. The leaves are of two forms, needle-like leaves and scale-leaves. The scale-leaves are elliptic about 1.5 mm long and decussate. The needle-like leaves are 5-10 mm long and decussate. The male and female flowers bloom in the terminal twigs in April. The fruits are strobiles and ripen in blackihs-purple in next year's October. Its Chinese name is "š¢”" (yuan bai).
