わが国の本州、関東地方に分布しています。「なんぶあざみ（南部薊）」の変種です。海岸近くの場所に生え、高さは６０〜１００センチになります。葉や総苞片の棘が太くて長いのが特徴です。８月から１０月ごろ、紅紫色の頭花を咲かせます。また花柄が短いので、かたまってつきます。名前は、この総苞を「いがぐり（毬栗）」に見立てたもの。

キク科アザミ属の多年草で、学名は Cirsium nipponicum var. comosum。英名はありません。

"Iga-azami" (Cirsium nipponicum var. comosum) belongs to Asteraceae (the Aster family). It is a perennial herb that is native to Kanto district of Honshu in Japan. It is a variety of "Nanbu-azami". This herb grows on coastwise places, and can reach 60-100 cm in height. It is defined by the thick and long spines of the leaves and involucal bracts. The magenta flower heads bloom from August to October. They are borne in a cluster because of their short peduncles.
