南アメリカのアマゾン流域が原産です。熱帯雨林や河岸などに生え、高さは１８メートル以上になります。葉は羽状複葉です。密生した穂状花序に花を咲かせ、果実は稜のある円筒形の莢果です。果肉は甘く、食用になります。葉や種子は、関節炎やリューマチ、下痢などの民間薬として用いられます。

Ice cream bean (Inga edulis) belongs to Fabaceae (the Pea family). It is an evergreen tall tree that is indigenous to the Amazon. This tree grows in the rainforests and riverbanks and can reach up to 18 m in height. The leaves are pinnate compounds. The flowers grow in dense spikes and the fruits are ribbed cylindrical pods. This sweet pulp are edible. The leaves and seeds are used against arthritis, rhumatism and diarrhea.
