The Painted feather (Vriesea carinata) belongs to Bromeliaceae (the Pineapple family). It is an evergreen perennial that is native to southeastern Brazil. It grows in humid tropical biomes, attached to trees, and is 20-40 cm tall. The leaves are thin, broadly lanceolate, and attached in rosettes. Water is absorbed from the base of these leaves rather than from the roots. From the leaf rosette grows a flower scape with yellow and rose-colored flower bracts at the tip. Yellow flowers bloom from between these bracts.
