わが国の本州、東北地方南部以西から四国・九州それに朝鮮半島南部や中国に分布しています。暖地にある山地の林内に生え、高さは６０〜１００センチになります。葉は２回羽状複葉で、光沢があります。中軸や葉柄には、光沢のある鱗片が生えています。鱗片は幅広で、ふつう明褐色をしています。和名は、この鱗片が生えた様子をイノシシの手に喩えたもの。中国語では「棕鱗耳蕨（zong lin er jue）」と呼ばれます。

オシダ科イノデ属の常緑シダ類で、学名は Polystichum polyblepharum。英名は Japanese tassel fern、Korean tassel fern。

The Japanese tassel fern (Polystichum polyblepharum) belongs to the family Dryopteridaceae. It is an evergreen fern that is native from southern Tohoku district of Honshu to Shikoku, Kyushu in Japan, the southern Korean Peninsula and China. This fern grows in warm-temperate mountain forests and can reach 60-100 cm in height. The leaves are bipinnate compound and glossy. The glossy scales are borne at the rachises and petioles. The scales are broad and usually light brown in color. The Japanese name is derived from the appearance of these scales growing on the hands of a wild boar. In Chinese, it is called "棕鱗耳蕨" (zong lin er jue).
