ヒマラヤ地方の北西部が原産です。森林や渓谷などに生え、高さは３０メートルほどになります。樹皮は灰色で平滑です。葉は掌状複葉で、倒卵形から披針形の小葉が５〜７個つきます。短い小葉柄があるのが特徴です。初夏、大きな円錐花序をだし、白色から淡紅色の花を咲かせます。長い雄しべが突き出します。

トチノキ科トチノキ属の落葉高木で、学名は Aesculus indica。英名は Indian horse chestnut。

Indian horse chestnut (Aesculus indica) bwlongs to the Hippocastanaceae (the Horse-chestnut family). It is a tall deciduous tree that is native to the northwestern part of the Himalayas region. This tree grows in forests and valleys, and its height is about 30 m. The bark is gray and smooth. Leaves are palmated compound, with 5-7 obovate to lancelate leaflets. It is characterized by short, small petioles. In the early summer, a large conical inflorescence is borne and white to pink red flowers bloom. Long stamens protrude.
