The "Inu-buna" (Fagus japonica) belongs to Fagaceae (the Beech family). It is a tall deciduous tree that is native to Japan; from Tohoku district of Honshu to Shikoku and Kyushu. This tree grows in mountains and can reach about 25 m in height. The barks are dark gray with many warty lenticles. The leaves are oblong and alternate with wavy obtuse toothed edges. They turn yellow in fall. The drooping male and female clusters are borne in the axils of new branches from April to May. The fruits are triangular nuts and drooping at the end of peduncles. The 19th photo is a bear's claw mark on the bark.
