The "Inu-gashi" (Neolitsea aciculata) belongs to Lauraceae (the Laurel family). It is a tall evergreen tree that is distributed from south Kanto district of Honshu west to Shikoku, Kyushu in Japan, as well as Taiwan and the south Korean Peninsula. This tree grows in mountains and can reach about 10 m in height. Barks are brayish-brown and have many small lenticels. Leaves are obovate-oblong, crowded alternate on the terminal branches, glossy and have prominent 3 veins. Reverse sides of leaves are powdery white. Small dark reddish-purple flowers come densely from March to April. It is called "鋭葉新木薑子" in Taiwanese Chinese.
In Korean, it's called "sae-deok-i" (새덕이). This is because the shape of the leaves resembles that of a "flatfish" (seo-dae: 서대). "seo-dae" is called "soe-dae-gi: (서대기)" in the Jeju dialect.
