わが国の本州、岩手県南部から四国・九州、それに朝鮮半島、中国中北部に分布しています。山地に生え、高さは３〜５メートルほどになります。枝は比較的まばらで、まとまりのない樹形です。葉は２列に並んでつき、裏面には白い２個の気孔帯があります。３月から４月ごろ、雄花は前年枝の葉腋に、雌花は枝先につきます。果実は翌年の秋に紅紫色に熟し、甘みがあります。

イヌガヤ科イヌガヤ属の常緑低木で、学名は Cephalotaxus harringtonia。英名は Japanese plum yew。

The Japanese plum yew (Cephalotaxus harringtonia) belongs to the Cephalotaxaceae family. It is a small evergreen tree that is native from southern Iwate prefecture of Honshu south to Shikoku and Kyushu, the Korean Peninsula and central-northern China. This tree grows in mountains and can reach 3-5 m in height. It has thin branches and a rambling tree form. The leaves are arranged in double rows with white 2 stomatal bands on abaxial sides. The male flowers come on the axiles of new branches and the female ones crowd on the terminal branches from March to April. The fruits ripen in peach bloom in next year's fall and have sweet taste.
