The "Inu-kata-hiba" (Selaginella moellendorffii) belongs to Selaginellaceae (the Spikemoss family). It is an evergreen fern that is distributed in the Yaeyama Islands of Japan (Ishigaki Island and Iriomote Island), as well as Taiwan, the Philippines, China and Vietnam. However, in Japan, it has also naturalized in Honshu, where it has escaped from cultivation. It grows on damp rocks along streams, and is 20-50 cm tall. The underground stem creeps along the ground, and the cladodes are erect or ascending, and branch three to four times. The leaves are dimorphic, with large ventral leaves and small dorsal leaves. The strobiluses are square-prismatic and bear asexual buds. In Chinese, it is called "江南卷柏" (jiang nan juan bai).
