カナダのケベック州からアメリカのノースダコタ州、アーカンソー州、オクラホマ州、テキサス州にかけて分布しています。わが国へは江戸時代の末期に渡来しました。現在では各地に帰化しています。９月から１０月に咲く「きくいも」にきわめて似ていますが、地下部に大きな芋をつくらないのが「いぬきくいも」です。高さは１．５〜３メートルになり、茎や葉には粗い毛が生えてざらつきます。「きくいも」よりも早く、７月から９月ごろに黄色い花を咲かせます。「きくいも」との区別は難しいですが、ここでは、舌状花の数が１０個以下で、花弁の先がやや尖っているという特徴を同定の基準としています。

キク科ヒマワリ属の多年草で、学名は Helianthus strumosus。英名は Paleleaf woodland sunflower。

The Paleleaf woodland sunflower (Helianthus strumosus) belongs to Asteraceae (the Aster family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed southward from Quebec to North Dakota, Arkansas, Oklahoma through Texas. It was introduced into Japan in the last days of Edo Era (1603-1868). It is naturalized over land now. This herb can reach 1.5-3 m in height. The stems and leaves are covered with rough hairs. Yellow flower-heads come in July to September. It resembles the Jerusalem artichoke closely and it is difficult to identify. It is defined by relatively-small toothed edges, relatively-long and not too recurving bracts.
