わが国の各地と朝鮮半島、中国に分布しています。山野の道端などに生え、高さは２０〜６０センチになります。茎には４稜があり、赤紫色を帯びています。葉は卵状披針形で対生し、小さな鋸歯があります。９月から１０月ごろ、長い花序をだし、淡紅紫色の花をちらほら咲かせます。台湾華語では「石薺薴」、中国語では「石薺薴（shi qi zhu）」と呼ばれます。

シソ科イヌコウジュ属の一年草で、学名は Mosla punctulata (syn. Mosla scabra)。英名はありません。

"Inu-kouju" (Mosla punctulata) belongs to Lamiaceae (the Mint family). It is an annual herb that is native all over Japan, as well as the Korean Peninsula and China. This herb grows on roadsides in mountains and fields, and it can reach 20-60 cm in height. The stems are quadrangular and tinged reddish puple. The leaves are ovate lanceolate and opposite with small toothed edges. The plae magenta flowers bloom here and there in the long clusters from September to October. In Taiwanese Chinese, it is called "石薺薴" and in Chinese "石薺薴" (shi qi zhu).
