わが国の各地をはじめ、台湾や朝鮮半島、中国の北部に分布しています。山地の林下や道ばたなどに生え、高さは30〜80センチになります。葉は卵形から卵状長楕円形で2回羽状から3回羽状深裂、先端が急に細くなります。羽片はやや上側に曲がります。ソーラス(胞子嚢群)は小羽片の中間から中肋寄りにつき、楕円形から馬蹄形です。台湾華語では「日本蹄蓋蕨」、中国語では「日本安蕨(ri ben an jue)」と呼ばれます。
イワデンダ科メシダ属の夏緑性シダ類で、学名は Athyrium niponicum (syn. Anisocampium niponicum)。英名は Japanese lady fern。
The Japanese lady fern (Athyrium niponicum) belongs to the family Woodsiaceae. It is a summer-green fern that is distributed throughout Japan, as well as in Taiwan, the Korean Peninsula, and northern China. It grows in mountainous areas under trees and along roadsides, reaching a height of 30 to 80 cm. The leaves are ovate to ovate-oblong, deeply lobed in a bipinnate to tripinnate pattern, and taper sharply at the tips. The pinnae curve slightly upward. The sori are located midway along the small pinnae, toward the midrib, and are elliptical to horseshoe-shaped. In Taiwanese Chinese, it is called "日本蹄蓋蕨", and in Chinese, "日本安蕨" (ri ben an jue).
