わが国の本州、関東地方西部から中部地方東南部に分布しています。山地のブナ林などに生え、高さは２０〜８０センチになります。葉は長楕円状披針形で、縁には鋸歯があり対生します。９月から１０月ごろ、枝先の総状花序に青紫色の花を咲かせます。花冠の上唇は浅く４裂して反り返り、下唇は舟形です。「やまはっか（山薄荷）」に似ていますが、上唇に線状の斑点がありません。

シソ科ヤマハッカ属の多年草で、学名は Rabdosia umbrosa。英名はありません。

"Inu-yamahakka" (Rabdosia umbrosa) belongs to Lamiaceae (the Mint family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed from the western part of the Kanto region to the southeastern part of the Chubu region of Honshu in Japan. It grows in beech forests in mountainous areas and grows 20 to 80 cm tall. It produces blue-purple flowers in racemes at the ends of its branches from September to October. The upper lip of the corolla is shallowly recurved with four lobes, and the lower lip is boat-shaped. It is similar to the "Yama-hakka", but without the linear spots on the upper lip.
