わが国の本州、島根県と福井県に分布しています。１９４１年に島根県の比婆山で発見されました。マダケ属またはナリヒラタケ属とササ属との属間交雑種と考えられ、タケとササの中間的な形態を示します。桿は直径３センチ、高さは４〜５メートルほどになり、「くまざさ」のような大きな葉をつけます。マダケ属に分類されることもあります。島根県の天然記念物に指定されています。

The Hibanobambusa (Hibanobambusa tranquillans) belongs to Poaceae (the Grass family). It is an evergreen bamboo that is distributed to Shimane and Fukui prefectures of Honshu in Japan, and was discovered in 1941 at Hiba Mountain in Shimane Prefecture. It is thought to be an intergeneric hybrid between the genera Phyllostachys or Semiarundinaria and Sasa, and has a form that is intermediate between that of a bamboo and that of a sasa. The culm is 3 cm in diameter and 4 to 5 m tall, with large "Kuma bamboo grass"-like leaves. It is sometimes classified in the genus Phyllostachys. It is designated as a natural monument by Shimane Prefecture.
