The "Iso-no-ki" (Rhamnus crenata) belongs to Rhamnaceae (the Buckthorn family). It is a small deciduous tree that is distributed to Honshu, Shikoku and Kyushu of Japan, as well as Taiwan, the Koren Peninsula and China. This tree grows in montane marshes and can reach about 4 m in height. The barks are grayish-brown and furrowed longitudially with row of lenticles. The leaves are oblong and alternate with shallowy toothed edges. The cymes are orne on the axils and bloom small yellowish green flowers from June to July. The fruits are drupes and ripen red to purplish-black. In Taiwanese Chinese, it is called "鈍齒鼠李", and "長葉凍緑" (chang ye dong lu).
