いちごのき (苺の木)

ヨーロッパの南東部から小アジアが原産です。またアイルランドの南西部にも自生していて、氷河期の遺存種だと考えられています。高さは１２メートルほどになり、葉は長楕円形から披針形です。葉柄は短く、縁には鋸歯があります。１０月から１２月ごろ、本年枝の上部の節に壺形の白い花を咲かせます。花冠にはピンク色や緑色の縁取りがあります。果実は１年後に赤く熟します。果実は酸味があり食用になります。 |

ツツジ科アルブツス属の常緑高木で、学名は Arbutus unedo。英名は Strawberry tree。 |

The strawberry tree (Arbutus unedo) belongs to Ericaceae (the Azalea family). It is a tall evergreen tree that is native to southeastern Europe, Asia Minor and southwestern Ireland. This tree is considered a relict species of glacial age. It can reach about 12 m in height. The leaves are oblong to lanceolate with short petioles and toothed edges. The whitish bell-shaped flowers come on the nodes of upper new branches from October to December. The corolla has pink or green outlining. The fruits ripen next year's fall to winter. They have acid tastes and edible. |
