わが国の各地をはじめ、東北アジアに分布しています。寒冷地や亜高山帯などに生え、高さは２０メートルほどになります。樹皮は赤褐色で、縦に浅く裂けて剥離します。葉は長さ２センチほどの線形で、螺旋状から２列につきます。雌雄別株まれに雌雄同株です。３月から５月ごろ、淡黄色の雄花と淡緑色の雌花を咲かせます。種子は紅色の仮種皮に包まれ、仮種皮は甘くて食べられます。和名は、むかしこの材で笏（しゃく）をつくったことから。

The Japanese yew (Taxus cuspidata) belongs to Taxaceae (the Yew family). It is a tall evergreen tree that is native throughout Japan and north-east Asia. This tree grows mainly in cold region, sub-alpine zone and can reach about 20 m in height. The barks are reddish brown, furrowed longitudially and peel thinly. The leaves are linear about 2 cm long, and arrange spirally or in double rows. It is dioecious, rarely monoecious. The pale yellow male flowers and pale green female flowers come in March to May. The seeds are covered with rose-pink arils that are sweet and edible.
