南アフリカのケープ地方から北東部のリンポポ州にかけて広く分布しています。半蔓性で匍匐して広がり、長さは３０〜９０センチになります。葉は掌状に浅裂し、「ヘデラ」に似ています。春から秋にかけて、葉腋から散形花序をだし、白色やピンク色の花を咲かせます。園芸品種も多く、八重咲きやさまざまな花色があります。和名では「つたばてんじくあおい（蔦葉天竺葵）」と呼ばれます。

フウロソウ科テンジクアオイ属の常緑多年草で、学名は Pelargonium peltatum。英名は Ivy geranium、Hanging geranium。

Ivy geranium (Pelargonium peltatum) belongs to Geraniaceae (the Geranium family). It is an evergreen herb that is native from Cape Province north-eastern to Limpopo Province of South Africa. This herb is semi-climbing, spreads by creeping on the grounds, and can reach 30-90 cm long. The leaves are lobate palmately, and resemble to Hedera helix. The umbels are borne at the axils, and the white or pink flowers bloom from spring to summer. There are many cultivars; double flowered and many flower colors.
