わが国の各地をはじめ、東アジアに広く分布しています。低山の湿った岩場に生え、高さは１０〜３０センチになります。茎は短く斜上し、葉を叢生します。葉は狭披針形の単羽状、両面に白い毛が生えます。羽片は三角状楕円形で基部前側に耳状突起があり、１５〜２４対つきます。ソーラスは丸く、縁の近くに１列につきます。

イワデンダ科イワデンダ属の夏緑性シダ類で、学名は Woodsia polystichoides。英名は Holly fern woodsia。

The Holly fern woodsia (Woodsia polystichoides) belongs to the family Woodsiaceae. It is a summer-green fern that is native to throughout Japan and widely East Asia. This fern grows in wet rocky places on low mountains, and can reach 10-30 cm in height. The leaves are unipennate, narrowly lanceolate and white hairy on both surfaces. The pinnae are deltoid-oblong, 15-24 pairs and eared upwards at the base. The sori are round and arranged in one row near the margin.
