わが国の本州、静岡県西部から愛知県東部に分布しています。山地や丘陵の林内に生えます。葉は円形から卵円形で、基部は深い心形、長い葉柄は紫色を帯びます。2月から5月ごろ、暗紫色から淡褐色の目立たない花を根もとに咲かせます。花弁はなく、萼筒の先端が3裂して平開します。和名は静岡県の磐田地方に因みます。 
ウマノスズクサ科カンアオイ属の常緑多年草で、学名は Heterotropa kurosawae (syn. Asarum kurosawae)。英名はありません。 
"Iwata-kan-aoi" (Heterotropa kurosawae) belongs to Aristolochiaceae (the Birthwort family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed from western Shizuoka Prefecture to eastern Aichi Prefecture of Honshu, Japan. It grows in forests in mountains and hills. It produces inconspicuous dark purple to light brown flowers at its base from February to May. There are no petals, and the calyx tube is flattened with three lobes at the tip. The Japanese name comes from the Iwata region of Shizuoka Prefecture.
