The "Iwa-hego-modoki" (Dryopteris x mayebarae) belongs to the family Dryopteridaceae. It is an evergreen fern that is distributed from Kanto to Kinki regions of Honshu, Shikoku and Kyushu in Japan. It is an interspecific hybrid of "Tsukushi-iwa-hego" (Dryopteris commixta) and "Okuma-warabi" (Dryopteris uniformis). It rarely grows along streams and on the forest floor in mountainous areas. The leaves are single to twice bipinnate compound, green to dark green, and have a hard, papery texture. There are about 20 pairs of lateral pinnae, sessile on the lower part and stipe on the upper part. The petiolar base is densely covered with dark brown to black scales that are not shiny. The sorus is located between the midrib and the margin of the pinna.
