わが国の固有種で、本州の近畿地方以北に分布しています。山地から亜高山帯の日当たりの良い岩場に生え、高さは50〜200センチになります。今年枝は赤色で稜があり、葉は倒卵形で全縁または先端に3個の鈍鋸歯があります。5月から7月ごろ、枝先に散房花序をだし、白色の花を咲かせます。
バラ科シモツケ属の落葉低木で、学名は Spiraea nipponica。英名はありません。
"Iwa-shimotsuke" (Spiraea nipponica) belongs to Rosaceae (the Rose family). It is a small deciduous tree that is endemic to Japan, distributed northward from Chubu district to Honshu. This tree grows in montane to sub-alpine sunny scrags and can reach 50-200 cm in height. The new branches are red, ridge and the leaves are obovate, entire or serrated obtuse at the tips. The white flowers bloom on the terminal corymbs from May to July.
