わが国の本州、中部地方以北から北海道、それに朝鮮半島に分布しています。山地から亜高山帯の林床に生え、高さは５０〜８０センチになります。葉は２回羽状複葉で叢生します。葉柄下部の鱗片は卵状披針形から披針形です。胞子嚢群は中肋と辺縁のほぼ中間につきます。包膜は円形でほぼ全縁です。名前は、福島県の旧国名「岩代」に因みます。

オシダ科イノデ属の半常緑性シダ類で、学名は Polystichum ovatopaleaceum var. coraiense。英名はありません。

"Iwashiro-inode" (Polystichum ovatopaleaceum var. coraiense) belongs to the family Dryopteridaceae. It is a semi-evergreen fern that is distributed northward from Chubu district of Honshu to Hokkaido in Japan and the Korean Peninsula. This fern grows in montane to subalpine forest floors, and up to a height of 50- 80 cm. The leaves are bi-pinnate compound and crowded. The scales at the bottom of the petioles are ovate-lanceolate to lanceolate. The sori are scattered on almost midway between the midrib and the margin. The indusia are round and almost entire. The Japanese name is attributed to the former country name "Iwashiro" in Fukushima Prefecture.
