南アフリカが原産です。栽培されているのは、おもに種間交雑によって改良された園芸品種です。暖地では秋植え、寒冷地では春植えの球根です。葉は剣状で、細い花茎を伸ばして、高さは３０〜６０センチになります。春から夏にかけて、ピンクや赤色、紫色、黄色そして白色などの花を咲かせます。

アヤメ科イクシア属の多年草で、学名は Ixia hybrid。英名は African corn-lily、Wand flower。

The African corn-lily (Ixia hybrid) belongs to Iridaceae (the Iris family). It is a perennial herb that is native to South Africa. There are many cultivars which have been breeded as interspecipic hybrids. These bulbs are for fall planting in warm climates and spring planting in colder climates. The leaves are lance-shaped. The slender flowering stalks can reach 30-60 cm in height. The pink, red, purple, yellow and white flowers bloom from spring to summer.
